Welcome to the heart of our nation! Springfield was established as the Illinois state capital in 1837 and is the seat of Sangamon County government. It is located at the intersection of Interstates 55 and 72. Chicago lies 200 miles northeast of Springfield, St. Louis and Indianapolis lie 100 miles southwest and 195 miles due east, respectively.

Sangamon County possesses a wide variety of quality neighborhood, community, and regional recreational resources. And speaking of golf courses, there are nine public and numerous private golf courses in the area.
Lake Springfield has what the water lover needs. Our lake provides 4,235 acres of water for recreation opportunities, surrounded by 57 miles of shoreline.
Popoular spectator sports include the University of Ilinois-Springfield, Lincoln Land Community College, and Springfield College in Illinois sports teams; and special professional and college level events help periodically at the Prairie Capital Convention Center.
Culture
Cultural programs, events, exhibits, concerts, classes and performances are available across the spectrum of the arts. The Springfield Muni Opera and Springfield Theater Center features local an regional performers for musicals, comedies and drama year round. Additionally, the community supports a ballet company, symphony orchestra and Springfield Municipal Band.
The Springfield Art Association conducts classes for children and adults, holds lectures, demonstrations and special art exhibits in the gallery of a restored Victorian mansion.
The Prairie Capital Convention Center and Public Affairs Center at The University of Illinois-Springfield play host to numerous national and international entertainers from Broadway plays, to major symphony orchestras to popular music groups and comedic entertainment. And, the Illinois State Fair brings additional entertainers to this annual event.
Other special events held each year include the renowned Old Capitol Art Fair, International Carillon Festival, Sangamon County Fair, and The Ethnic Festival. And with the addition of the Hoogland Center for The Arts, we have a state of the art facility for most any cultural event.
Historic Sites
Springfield and its surrounding communities offer a lot to do and see. Certainly the biggest attractions are the historic sites honoring our native son, Abraham Lincoln. The world recognized Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum offers scholars and the general public the opportunity to gain a keen understanding of the man respected the world over. And when you include the Lincoln Home and Neighborhood, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, Lincoln Tomb, and Lincolns New Salem we truly cover the life and times of this great American. Other attractions include the Dana-Thomas House, the Old State Capitol, the Illinois State Capitol, and the Executive Mansion.
Education
The University of Illinois at Springfield, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield College in Illinois and St. John's College, Department of Nursing offer students a diverse selection of higher education opportunities. The many public and private primary school districts and parochial schools provide a wide variety of quality education choices. In fact, Springfield area schools have earned a Blue Ribbon designation by Expansion Management Magazine.
Population/Economy
Balanced between the public and private sectors, Springfield has a well-diversified economic base and an approximate population of 113,000 people. Springfield serves as headquarters for nationally known insurance companies and state, regional, and national associations. In addition, the community is home to outstanding healthcare, distribution, manufacturing, technology, and agricultural organizations.
Government
Springfield is the hub of Illinois political activity. As one of the largest and most influential states in the U.S., the state capitol building is a flurry of legislative activity each fall and spring. The city also serves as the seat of county government. The local government is based on a strong mayoral aldermanic council.

Moderate year-round temperatures. Average temperatures range from 70-80 in the summer months to 30-40 in the winter months.
